Last night was the annual fund-raising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. This year’s theme was Rei Kawakubo/Comme Des Garçons, the exhibition itself is titled “The Art of the In-Between”. The reclusive designer, who founded label Comme des Garçons in 1969, is the focus of the museum’s latest exhibit and a rare bird in an industry full of peacocks. She scarcely gives interviews, doesn’t have personal social media accounts and won’t measure her success on praise from others.
Guests to the yearly fundraiser held in honor of the exhibit are encouraged to channel the subject of the new showcase, which typically happens with varying degrees of success. Some stars hit the nail on the head this year really embodying the theme (and actually wearing the designer) like Rihanna. The singer wore a Comme des Garçons look, straight off the Fall 2016 runway.
There were, for sure, some brave souls: Pharrell Williams, an event co-chairman, in ripped jeans, “Rei” inked on the knee, plaid shirt and motorcycle jacket; his wife, Helen Lasichanh, in a red jumpsuit that flattened and haloed the body and had no armholes.
Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid seemed, for example, to have taken inspiration from Ms. Kawakubo’s statement in 2013 that she had decided to stop making clothes for her runway collections (she was making “objects for the body”) and decided that they too, would stop wearing clothes; and instead, wear underwear!
Let’s see who wore what below!
